DIY Wine Crate
Not too long ago – literally people, it was just last weekend, be proud of the minimal delay! – a good friend of ours had a bridal shower. She and her fiancé have been living together for the past couple months, so they don’t really need anything. I decided that I wanted to take on a project to make for them instead of buy them something from their registries.
Yes, I know, I was that person who deviated from the registry for a gift. Bear with me here.
These two…they like wine. No, I take that back, they LOVE wine. I had recently seen a gift given that had to do with wine for specific holidays/events with adjoining poem and knew that they would love it. But what to put it in…
I searched their registries for any baskets, then searched Amazon and Google for some vintage-looking wine boxes, but nothing was speaking to me. I then decided, what the heck, I need a break from studying for the ARE…let’s do this shiz.
So I made my way to the local Michaels and got an unfinished crate and some paint. I then went to Home Depot and got some materials for another project (to be seen soon, I promise) and some grey stain for this project (and the other). Then I set off for home to work.
This project was actually super easy. I put on 3 coats of the grey stain, pretty liberally, with sanding in between each coat. I wanted it to be more grey than wood, but still wanted to see the wood grain. To each his own. The most time consuming step was Xacto-ing the lettering out of a piece of paper, penciling it onto the crate, and then doing 2 coats of paint…veeerrryyyyy patiently….for the wording. Et voila.
Turned out distressed-looking and lovely. Below is the final product complete with wine.
Even though it wasn’t on their registry, I’d like to think they were more than happy with their take-away for the day. Cheers to a happy life!
