FIVE years ago today, my first book baby published. The #AREsketches started out as an organic idea to help people get licensed, turned into a newsletter, and then a book. Over a THOUSAND copies later, it also has a second volume, and recently #TheLittleArchitectsAlphabet joined their ranks. With 2 more books in planning stages! If you had told me 5 years ago where I’d be today, I would have laughed. But this is why it’s so important to work at your passions and SHIP YOUR WORK. You never know where those early ideas might lead you.

A couple memory numbers that ARE material likes to reference re: material testing. Visualize it, rhyme it, memorize it. Whatever works for your study process is the important piece. #AREsketches

Fire safety is one of the most important outcomes in material and assembly testing. But how does it work? #AREsketches

Doing some web research for #AREsketches and found that a planning commission in Arkansas used my sketches during some research and improvement planning for their town. 💪🏼💪🏼 ARE sketches help Architects and non-Architects alike! #whatanarchitectdoes

Had to pull some stats for an application and realized this little #AREsketches milestone was passed without notice at the start of 2020. Head to the grindstone, giving back to my community, eager to improve the profession – it makes it easy to miss the milestones when you’re busy planning toward the next idea. But the milestones are just as sweet when you finally realize it. And great motivation to keep going. #whatanarchitectdoes

Testing and standards are the scientific background for architectural building codes, but don’t gain their backbone until codified by law. Each part needs the other. #AREsketches

I got this picture from a friend yesterday. Her 8-year old was looking for a new book to read and picked up one of the #AREsketches volumes on their shelf. While I design these study guides to help future architects along their paths as they take their licensing tests — breaking down each complex system, program, or material into an easy-to-understand idea + sketch — it floored me that a grade-schooler would be interested in these books. You can never get a kid interested in architecture and the world around them too early! #futurearchitect

One month down in the new decade! A lot of work towards goals and plans for the year has begun and I’m excited to see how the year shapes out. On the docket: finish #L2HQ fence and start kitchen/first floor full bath reno; two (at least) big vacations with @hoeflinger_32; lots of work and learning and mentoring; tons of walks/hikes with M, C, and Z; more #AREsketches and plenty more dates, experiences, and road trips with B ❤️.

Tonight, after listening to 15 years worth of @debbiemillman taking deep dives on #DesignMatters, pulling at her interviewees and finding threads and patterns as they talk through their life’s work and what makes them tick…I got to sit in a room and listen to the woman/icon herself do a deep dive on her own life and the threads of authentic consistency that kept her searching for her way to make a difference. I took notes the only way I knew how – a la #AREsketches. And then she was kind enough to sign them. Happy 15th anniversary, Debbie. Thanks for talking about how to make a difference and then leading the way in doing so.
