2017 Goals Update

2017 goals update

Well, the image above pretty much sums up the year so far…and especially of late. Life is moving so quickly that I totally missed a July check in and then mislabeled my next month’s section in my Leuchtturm1917 planner. The first half of the year has been full of travel, conferences, projects, AREsketches, L2 Design Lab work, and – unfortunately – not nearly enough “me time”. So let’s check in with a 2017 goals update to see how it’s going.

AREsketches

I mentioned in my April AREsketches goals update at the one-year anniversary of the first book that my goal was to finish out the 4.0 sections, but after some quick schedule projections, I realized that I needed to switch to 5.0. The books are taking about a year per section to do all of the drawings for, which means the next 4.0 section would’ve come out just before the 4.0 tests are to sunset next summer. So instead, I switched to 5.0 to continue helping the maximum amount of people. I’m currently working on Programming & Analysis and am 178 sketches into the section.

In January, there were 352 book sales, 428 sketches shared, and 433 newsletter subscribers.

Today, there are 585 book sales, 472 sketches shared, and 477 newsletter subscribers.

And there’s plenty more sketches to come…and plenty more people to help get licensed.

So many updates!

I presented to IHPC (Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission) for the first time, the contractor is all but done with the construction renovations, I’m almost done demoing the deck, and the painter is still working away on paint removal and siding patchwork. You can stay updated on Instagram and I plan to do a thorough construction update next week.

Me time

This one has been hard with how crazy busy life has been. I’ve had to say no to some great things to make way for other great things. I’ve had to suffer through some stressful deadlines (read: every architect ever). And I’ve not done nearly enough hiking. The pups and I are trying to make a habit of weekend walks in the neighborhood (A full loop of the 6 blocks is just over 3 miles), but I need to get us out exploring into the depths of the wilderness.

I *have* however, been CRUSHING my 1 book per month goal. Check this out:

2017 goals update 2

If I had to pick my top 3 in work, life, and fun fiction (the 3 genres I try to rotate between) so far this year, it would be:

Work: The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business

Definitely helpful from a work standpoint, but also insightful and inspiring.

“This is the real power of habit: the insight that your habits are what you choose them to be.”

Fun: The Martian

There were times I literally laughed out loud. Like this quote:

“I can’t wait till I have grandchildren. “When I was younger, I had to walk to the rim of a crater. Uphill! In an EVA suit! On Mars, ya little shit! Ya hear me? Mars!”

Life: When Breath Becomes Air

Pick up this book. Today. Tonight. Tomorrow. Just read it. There’s a lot of medical life in there, but it’s a good reminder to get down to the base value of what makes you…you. And what makes life worth living for you. You have to invest in that, otherwise…what’s the point?

“There is a moment, a cusp, when the sum of gathered experience is worn down by the details of living. We are never so wise as when we live in this moment.”

So what needs to be redirected moving forward?

  1. I need to focus more on AREsketches. The house and work deadlines have taken a front seat of late and I have responsibilities to those testing to be consistent with my content.
  2. I need to focus more on me, my time, and my health. That means eating better, exercising more, and enjoying the pups more.

Help keep me accountable, will you? Oh, and send any book recommendations my way.

Until next time,
